Westonbirt Arboretum Trip

On Tuesday, Zebra Class had the most wonderful day at Westonbirt Arboretum. Our tour guide, Karen, led a nature session for us. We looked at different types of trees and their leaves, we talked about deciduous and evergreen trees and we found many interesting things on the forest floor, such as conkers, acorns and even droppings from animals that live in the forest. We have brought many of these things home with us so that we can create some natural art with these items. We were amazed by how many different creatures live in the forest and even tried to find some badgers, although we decided they probably did not enjoy coming out in the daytime. We did find evidence that they had been digging and burrowing though.

Karen also taught us lots of amazing facts about minibeasts and we hunted for as many different kinds as possible using magnifying glasses, spoons, brushes and trays. We found spiders, centipedes, worms, millipedes, ants, woodlice, beetles, slugs and even a very hairy caterpillar that would soon turn into a moth. Did you know that a woodlouse has 14 legs? Did you also know that if a worm has a saddle across its middle it is an adult worm?

We also completed the treetop walk before lunch. We were so high above the forest floor and we found this very exciting indeed. We were all brave enough to climb up into the 'crow's nest' where we had a fantastic view of the whole arboretum.

Many of us said we would love to return to the arboretum and explore it some more with our parents in the future. It really is a wonderful day out. Zebra Class were so well behaved and Karen commented on this before we left- so well done, Zebras! Also, thank you to Kiri for joining us for the day and helping us on our trip. We loved having you!
