Starting school for the first time
At Westbury Infant School, we take pride in ensuring a smooth and welcoming transition for all children, whether they come from local nurseries or have not previously attended a pre-school setting. Our carefully planned induction programme helps children settle quickly and happily into our Reception class and school community.
During the summer term before your child starts school, our Early Years Lead aim to visit all new children in their pre-school environments. In addition, we invite parents to a New Parent Induction Meeting at school. This meeting provides an opportunity to meet staff, ask questions, and tour our facilities.
When September arrives, new pupils initially attend part-time, gradually building up to full-time attendance. This gradual introduction helps children adjust comfortably to their new environment.
Once in school, children enjoy exploring, discovering, and learning, primarily through play-based activities. Our indoor and outdoor environments are carefully designed and well-equipped to allow safe investigation and experimentation. Activities are thoughtfully selected to encourage early engagement with letters, numbers and other key skills. We recognise and celebrate that every child is unique, supporting each one to follow their own interests and develop at their own pace.

How to appeal a school place decision
Wiltshire Council administer admissions appeals on behalf of all maintained schools, including academies. All appeals are held in accordance with the Department for Education's School Admissions Code and the School Admissions Appeal Code.

The purpose of these codes is to ensure that the admission appeal panel is independent and that appeals are conducted in a fair, transparent and lawful way.
You are legally entitled to appeal against the admission authority’s decision to refuse a place at your preferred school(s). Accepting a place at an alternative school does not affect your child’s place on the reserve list for your preferred school(s), or your right of appeal. Your appeal will be heard by an independent school admission appeals panel. The panel's decision is binding on all parties: the school, the admission authority and you.
