Meerkats and meteorology!

Gosh, this term is flying by but the children are still enthusiastically packing in lots of fun and learning.  Our kindness elf Sparkle arrived on Thursday and is really enjoying being in Meerkat Class, the children chose a book for her to read when we had all gone home.

Letters were sent home last week with the children’s parts for the performance, please ensure that their costumes are in school on THURSDAY 7th DECEMBER in a named carrier bag.  Please do not feel that you need to go to great expense to provide them with one as we like to keep things very simple.  If you are struggling to source any costumes, please do come and see one of the Key Stage 1 team and we will be more than happy to help you.

The children have continued to enthusiastically explore shape this week in Maths.  They have identified the vertical line of symmetry and found the 2-D shapes on the faces of 3-D shapes, counted edges and vertices.  What shapes can the children spot in their own homes?

We enjoyed a virtual visit from the author John Dougherty on Wednesday and he read us his story of ‘There’s a pig up my nose’, sang us a song and played his guitar.  In English this week, the children have consolidated all their learning about penguins to write non-chronological report.  They have included interesting facts and descriptive language. They have also enjoyed sharing ideas and each other’s work.  They all produced an amazing report – we were very proud of them all.

The children learnt about staying safe at swimming this week and our instructors were very impressed with how much the children already knew and could share.  Well done to all the children, you have all grown in confidence in the water and have made fantastic progress.  Next week will be our last swim session.  Thank you so much to all the parents and grandparents who have helped at these sessions – your help has been invaluable!

We began our new topic in Geography ‘Why does the weather change so much?’  We have been outside the classroom in our role of meteorologists to observe the weather and record it with the correct weather symbols.  We have also learnt about the weather patterns in the different seasons and coastal and inland locations. The children then in groups, created mind maps to show all they knew.

We have been sharing ‘My Monster and Me’ by Nadiya Hussain in class.  Here’s the link if you would like to share it at home too.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6kR-Wmbmpg We are really fortunate to have Rhonda visit us each week to listen to the children read.  Please ensure that your child has their reading journal and book in school each day.  Also, please see the RWI blog for further ideas to support your child’s reading.  https://www.westbury-inf.wilts.sch.uk/News/Friday-1st-December-2023/  Oxford Owl logins have been put inside your child’s reading journal to further support and offer resources.

Next week, Mrs Jeffery will be in class Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday morning, Thursday and Friday with Mrs Watts taking Meerkat Class on Wednesday afternoon. Ms Smith, our amazing TA will be with the class all week.

Wishing you all a lovely cosy weekend.
