Westbury Infant School and Resource Base

Friday 13th September 2024

We had a fabulous week in Kangaroo class this week! I am so impressed with how well the children are doing. There are some lovely friendships blossoming and the children are kind and respectful to each other. This week our focus was on feelings so we read the colour monster to help us understand how colours can link to our emotions. The children enjoyed learning about the different colour monsters and we saw lots of beautiful artwork inspired by the story. The children have created different representations of feelings when playing in the environment. The pineapple faces game was very popular and the emotion rollers in the playdough were well utilised this week. The children have all had a go at drawing a colour monster and talking about what makes them feel a certain colour. As well as learning about feelings we have been learning about the school community so on Friday we went on a tour of the school. The last stop was the adventure playground which the children enjoyed exploring. Please see our knowledge organiser to see what your child will learn for the rest of the term.

In our communication and language sessions, the children have had an amazing time taking part in squiggle whilst you wiggle. This is a program to support early writing skills through movement. The children had the opportunity to learn the poem ‘Silly’ which they performed brilliantly. On Friday, I introduced the children to helicopter stories. The children loved helping to act out different stories and playing different characters. In our Read Write Inc sessions, the children have practiced the routines of my turn your turn, magnet eyes and can name the picture side of the cards. We have loved playing the Fred Games from the portal. If you would like the link to these then please follow the link below:

In our maths sessions, the children have been learning to subitise (recognise a small amount without counting). The children looked at dice patterns and played a game of connect three trying to roll the dice to match the dot patterns on a bingo grid. We have been using talk pictures for the children to share what they can see as well as reading lots of mathematical stories.

The children had their very first PE session and they showed fantastic listening skills in the hall. The could move around without bumping into anyone and follow the rules of the game. I believe the children had a great time.

As you can see the children have worked their socks off and I hope they have a well-deserved rest.

Have a lovely weekend
