Poetry and Brunel the Engineer!
Wow – another fabulous week for the Marvellous Meerkats which finished on a golden high with all of the children getting a gold card for their fantastic English firework inspired poetry. Myself and the team were so impressed with the children’s handwriting, word choices and inclusion of capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. We have also been chorally reciting poetry and the children’s reader voice is really developing with great tone and enthusiasm. It is wonderful to see their growing love of all the books we share.
We have been equally impressed with the explanations the Meerkats have given for proving ‘how they know’ and ‘what they have noticed’ in maths. We have been partitioning numbers and working with number lines. The children have been accurately plotting numbers using their knowledge of number order and value and estimated where numbers would go on blank number lines. Great maths vocabulary being used – keep it up Meerkats!
Whilst it is only the first week of our new history topic of ‘Who was Isambard Kingdom Brunel and why are his achievements remembered?’ the children’s interest and enthusiasm has already been captured. We have looked at sources of evidence to find out when he was alive, what his job was and why he is remembered for his achievements. The children have found out that he was a Victorian engineer and have looked at his involvement in transport developments and it is especially interesting as so many of his works are in our local area; SS Great Britain, Clifton Suspension Bridge and Box tunnel.
Linking to our history topic, next week we will be visiting SS Great Britain on Friday 22nd November. A packed lunch and bottle of water will be provided by school for every child. Can they please have a small back pack to carry their lunch. Children should be in full school uniform, including a warm coat. We will be leaving at 9.00 and be back before the end of the school day.
In computing, we looked at ‘games apps’ identifying them as programmes and used QR codes to load Ceebeeies to see and use and range of app games. The children worked so well in partners and successfully opened and closed programmes before sharing their favourite choices with the whole class.
We are looking at Christianly and the Christmas story in RE this term. The children re-enacted the story with puppets and ordered the story sequence, retelling the story. We have also thought about gifts and the first gifts of Christmas. The children have shared memories of special gift that they have received and how it made them feel.
