"Celebrate the Magic of Lunar New Year: Traditions, Stories, and Festivities Await!"

Wow another fun packed week in Kangaroo class has whizzed by!! This week the story focus was Goldy Luck and Three Pandas an alternative version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The story is set in China and Goldy Luck and the Pandas are celebrating Lunar New Year. As part of our Drawing club sessions the children drew the characters, setting and we thought about different vehicles that might take us to China. We had flying surfboards, rockets, rocks powered by dynamite and all other modes of transport. The children buzzed with excitement as they shared how their transport would work. Following on from their vehicle design the children had to think of a code to make their vehicle travel. Our new vocabulary for this week was the following words: observe, narrow, texture, panic, gloopy, reluctant, exhausted and determined. It would be great if you could help your child use these words in different contexts.

In our Maths learning this week we have looked at the numbers 6,7 and 8. The children have made collections of those numbers, made number posters for number 7 and sorted what was 8 not 8 as part of their challenges. The children enjoyed a game of Non-standard dot pattern bingo and were excited when their number was called. We have also started to look at the composition of these numbers and what numbers can hide in them. The children have used double sided counters to explore different numbers that add to 6,7, or 8.

We have experimented with freezing and melting water as part of our topic learning this week. The children observed the changes as they created ice and watched carefully as the ice melted. We discussed how liquids could be turned into solids and how the change could be reversed. The children continued to listen to and play the glockenspiels as part of their music session and the children have had lots of fun in PE using the apparatus to practice jumping and landing from a height.

On Friday, we had our Far Away Friday session, the children were excited to be given their passports to board the plane travelling to China. We had such a great flight where we saw some famous landmarks/sights such as the Great Wall of China, The Terracotta Warriors, The Forbidden City and the Olympic Village. This inspired the children’s play and they made a fantastic representation of The Great Wall of China. The children also made paper chain snakes as it is the Year of the Snake, Lanterns to decorate the classroom and dancing dragons. The children have been learning the song below about a dragon perhaps they will sing it to you at home. The Chinese Restaurant in the Role-play area was a hit this week and a very popular destination. As part of our celebrations the children made their very own spring rolls and enjoyed eating these alongside some noodles and prawn crackers. Lots of children tried using chopsticks and mastered how to pick up the noodles with these! It was a fantastic way to end the week.

I hope you have a lovely weekend
