A Gruffalo…. why don’t you know there is no such thing as a Gruffalo!
This week in our literacy sessions we have been learning about the Gruffalo. This story is one of our favourites and the children have enjoyed joining in with the repeated refrains. In our provision the children have had the opportunity to role-play the different characters, tell the story using the small world figures and make the different houses where the animals live. In our Message centre the children have created symbols for the characters and attempted to label these.
In our maths sessions this week we have focused on the number five. We have made collections of five, made five posters and talked about how five can be made using different numbers. The children enjoyed watching the episode of Numberblocks called ‘Off we go!’ The Numberblocks get in a muddle and then they sing a song to order themselves. The children enjoyed pretending to be the Numberblocks and ordering themselves by singing the song, “I’m bigger than you, I’m smaller than you diddly diddly do.”
In our Topic session this week the children have been learning about the woodlands. We discussed what we would find in the woods and how we would be safe on our school trip. The children enjoyed looking at the map from Moors Valley and talking about what they would see on their school trip. Following the trip, the children loved looking at the photographs from the trip and talking about their experiences.
Our trip to Moors Valley Country Park was filled with excitement, especially when we found the incredible Gruffalo statues hidden in the woods. We spotted sculptures of the sly fox, the wise owl, the marvellous mouse, the sneaky snake and of course, the Gruffalo himself! The children loved the adventure play areas from making music in the House of Baba Yaga to climbing the challenging Bewildernest. Whilst the weather wasn’t the best it didn’t dampen our spirts too much and the children were amazing! The trip was a fantastic way to enjoy nature and it was a memorable day of exploration and imagination. In the words of some of the children, “It was the best day ever!”
