Run, Run as fast as you can you can't catch me...I'm the Gingerbread Man!

This week the children have fully embraced our story 'The Gingerbread Man' and taken it into their play. The children loved the costumes for each of the different characters and enjoyed chasing the gingerbread man! The children can retell the story using story language and have tried really hard to use the new vocabulary bake, scrumptious, drenched, bellowed, mischievous, halt, gobbled and astonished when playing. As part of our drawing club adventures the children have been thinking of codes to make things happen. On Tuesday they were set the challenge to think of a way the Gingerbread Man could get across the river without the help of the fox. We had lots of brilliant ideas such as bridges, rockets, boats and even a catapult to fire the gingerbread man across. Our Adventure day challenged the children to think of a way the gingerbread man could escape a trap. The children thought of sofas to jump on, jet packs and airplanes to get out of the trap.

We were very lucky this week as the children were surprised with a dance workshop linked to our story. It was really magical to watch as the children told the story through dance.

In our Maths sessions this week we looked at Zero and what could represent Zero in the environment. The children enjoyed thinking of Zero things that they could see for example one of the children said, I can see zero unicorns and another I can see zero dinosaurs. We have used counting songs and rhymes such as Alice the camel has one hump and Five Crocodiles come out to play alongside the five frames to recognise one more or less than a given number. The children have explored the parts of five using the bingo dabbers by chosing two colours to represent how five can be made.

In our topic sessions this week, we looked at how kitchens have changed through time. We compared the similarities and differences between a kitchen from 1620 to the present day. As part of our creative lessons the children are practicing their scissor skills and this week the children had the challenge to create an octopus cutting both curved and straight lines. Towards the end of the week the children enjoyed making Gingerbread People. They observed the changes of ingredients and followed the instructions to make some truly scrumptious Gingerbread People.

On Friday, We had to turn into detectives to solve the problem of the missing gingerbread people!!! We returned from lunch to find the oven door open and the gingerbread people missing from the baking tray. We quickly checked the CCTV footage to find the following video!

The children leapt to action and created traps to capture the missing gingerbread people. We went on a hunt around the school to investigate sightings of the gingerbread man and luckily on return to the classroom the traps had worked and the gingerbread people were captured much to the delight of the children.

It was definitely another exciting week in Kangaroo Class and I hope you all have a lovely weekend.
