Brunel's SS Great Britain!
The highlight of this week was definitely our trip to the SS Great Britain. In History, we have been learning about Isambard Kingdom Brunel and his famous achievements, our trip allowed us to bring this to life and see one of his famous ships first hand.
We started our tour underneath the great ship, in the dry dock, where we got to see just how large the ship actually is. We could see up close the iron hull, the screw propeller and rudder which were all part of Brunel’s engineering vison to make transport travel faster and further. The glass water ceiling made it feel like we were really under the water. the children loved this!
When it was time to board the ship, the children collected their travel cards and walked onto the deck. We saw the animals, the flags and some of the machinery that helped the ship to move. Inside, we saw the cabins for both the first class and lower-class passengers, spotting the differences between them both. Then, we saw the back of the ship where animals, such as horses, and carriages were kept. We walked through the kitchen, heading into the posh dining area with fancy tableware and areas to play cards or read. The mannequins brought like on the ship to light, we saw a doctor, butcher, chef and passengers, just as if they were taking the 2 week voyage to America. It was a lovely trip and I would like to thank the adults who came and helped us on the day :)
