Welcome back Marvellous Meerkats to Term 5!
Welcome back to Term 5! The Marvellous Meerkats have enthusiastically jumped straight back into their learning and the lovely Spring weather has allowed us to take some of our learning outside and enjoy playtimes on the trim trail.
In English, we have been sharing poems from Shirley Hughes ‘Out and About’ collection and the children have even written their own poems this week inspired by Shirly’s poems entitled Mudlarks, Water and Sand. We explored mud, water and sand to help us with the descriptive language we would use. We have looked at the simplicity of some poems structure and how the rich language, read with tone and expression can bring poems to life. As you can see in the photos the children all performed their chosen poems with great energy. Here’s a link if you would like to share the poems at home.

It was all about money in Maths. The children have really enjoyed the practical first week looking at pounds and pence, the different coins and notes and how we recognise the different values. We even spoke about what you could buy with the different coins and why you don’t often see £50 notes. If you have any change at home please do continue this exploration, in this digital cashless age it is surprising how little, children may have had the opportunity to handle money.
We began our new Science topic ‘Season’ this week too. We have previously looked at Autumn and Winter and this term we are finding out all about Spring and Summer. We took our learning outside to look for signs of Spring and the good weather gave us lots to see and hear. If you are out and abut this weekend and spot any special signs of Spring (lambs, tadpoles, flowers) please take a photo and send it in to our class email.
Our PE days remain the same this term MONDAY and FRIDAY. Please ensure your child wears PE kit (school jumper/cardigan, white tee shirt (or polo shirt), charcoal or black shorts or charcoal or black joggers. There is no need for different shoes or daps.) to school on these days to enable them to fully participate in the activities. If you are having difficulty providing your child with PE kit please let me know.
Later this term on MONDAY 12th MAY, we will be going on a walk around Westbury as part of our Geography topic. We will be leaving school around 1.30pm and be back for 3pm. If you are able to help by walking with us, please let me know via the class email. Letters with details about the walk will be sent out by the school office next week.
We finished the week with our sponsored silence. On the sound of the bells the children were silent for a minute at various points in the day. They all successfully completed the challenge – well done Marvellous silent Meerkats! Thank you all for the sponsor money which you sent in.
Next week, I will be in class Monday – Thursday and Mrs Rous will be teaching Meerkats on Friday. Our wonderful TA, Miss Smith will be in with the Meerkats all week.
Have a wonderful weekend – looks like the sun will be shining.
Mrs Jeffery and Miss Smith.
