The Meerkat Gem Jar is Full

Wow!!! I think this is a first for a Meerkat Class but the children filled their gem jar by week 4!  Together we agreed how we would like our class to be ‘In Meerkat Class we will be…’ and the children have certainly excelled at meeting these agreements. Myself and the team are so very proud of them all.  We celebrated on Friday afternoon with some ‘choosing time’ and what a wonderful end to another busy week it was.  Keep it up marvellous Meerkats!

The Parent Consultation appointment sign-up sheet has been outside class this week, thank you to those who have already signed up I am really looking forward to sharing your child’s learning with you.  May I just ask a favour here, if you took a photo of the sheet as a reminder of your appointment time could you please delete it once you have added it to your diary/calendar as it has some of the children’s full names on it.  Thank you I really appreciate your understanding and support with this.

In Drawing Club, we stepped right back in time and watched Mr Benn – a childhood favourite of mine. Inspired by his visit to the zoo, the children drew and wrote codes about various animals; capturing them and liberating them in the most interesting ways. It was fantastic to hear the children link their science learning to their codes, knowing what their chosen animal would need to survive.

We continued exploring numbers up to 20 in maths.   The children used maths vocabulary to tell me what they know about different numbers and amounts when comparing, knowing why a number was greater than or less than another. They ordered numbers and used the resources to show prove the smallest and largest amount.  The Year 1 children have continued to work really hard on their digit formation – do let them show you at home.

This week we finished our science topic ‘Who lives here and why’.  The children have enthusiastically engaged in this topic and have soaked up all the learning.  They were all able to ‘Show me what you know’ (do ask them about our little song) in their end of topic pieces.  Myself and the team were quite blown away with the detail and knowledge shown.  Well done super stars.

In RE we have listened to and watched Christian stories from the bible about kindness.  As said before Meerkat Class have already established themselves as a really kind class and so have quickly identified who was kind in the stories and been able to tell me why and how to be kind.

We have explored emotions and how we show how we are feeling in Life Skills so do not be alarmed when you see cross and sad faces in the photos, this was just the children showing different emotions.  We use the Colour Monsters in school to help us name and label our emotions so here is a link so you can share it at home too.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68Ta6crRe4Y

A shout out for helpers:

We will be attending All Saints Church, Westbury for our annual Harvest Service on Thursday 16th October.  If you are able to walk with us as a helper please let myself or one of the team know.  We will be leaving school at 1.35pm and be back by 3pm.   Helpers will need to be able to walk there and back with us.  For those joining us at the church, the service will start at 2pm.  Thank you to those parents who have already said they can walk with us but we do still need some more.

As the weather becomes a little chilly and hats and gloves come into school, please ensure that they are named.  I do encourage the children to put their sweatshirts/cardigans in their drawer and will do the same with hats and gloves (as our cloak room can become very busy) but inevitably sometimes little items go astray so naming them helps.  Thank you.

Next week, I will be in class all week with our wonderful TAs, Miss Smith and Miss Lloyd.

Wishing you all a very happy and cosy weekend.
