Spring walks and performing poetry

We have had a lovely start back into Term 5! This year is going so quick!

The children have jumped straight back into it and have started a new topic in Science by focusing on Spring and Summer. It was great to go on a walk around the school to see signs of the spring, the children spotted blossom, plants growing, birds and nests in the trees and insects flying around. They even noticed the warmer temperature and some rain in the air. We discussed how daylight hours change. The children recorded in a pictogram how many hours of daylight each season had on average and they concluded that winter has the fewest, while summer has the most. After, we identified the signs of summer.

In maths, we began looking at money. The children recognised coins and notes and have counted in pound and pence to find totals. They used their knowledge of 2s, 5s and 10s to help them.

We have looked at a new book in English called ‘Out and About: A First Book of Poems’ by Shirley Hughes. The children explored mud, water and sand on Tuesday to help them describe what it looks and feels like. Then, we read poems from the book to help us expand on our ideas. The children had a go at writing their own poems- using adjectives, similes and alliteration to describe. They performed more poems from the book on Friday.

Our PE days have returned back to MONDAY and FRIDAY this term.  Please ensure your child wears PE kit (school jumper/cardigan, white tee shirt (or polo shirt), charcoal or black shorts or charcoal or black joggers. There is no need for different shoes or daps.) to school on these days to enable them to fully participate in the activities.  If you are having difficulty providing your child with PE kit please let me know.

Later this term on Wednesday 14th May, we will be going on a walk around Westbury as part of our Geography topic.  We will be leaving school around 1.30pm and be back for 3pm.  If you are able to help by walking with us, please let me know via the class email.  Letters with details about the walk will be sent out by the school office next week.

This week, the temperature is expected to rise. Please ensure the children have sun cream applied to them and sunhats in school to wear at break and lunch times.
