Skipping Meerkat Superstars!
The marvellous Meerkats have had another fabulous week and it has been great to see how bonded they have become in just 3 weeks. Myself and the team have noticed already how well they play and work together, sharing ideas and genuinely being a really kind class - we are so proud of them all. Lots of gems filling the jar daily so it won’t be long before they will be rewarded with a class treat.
I think the highlight of the week was seeing the pride on each of their faces as we embarked on the skill of skipping in PE. We had discussed that it was a tricky skill but that we would all be resilient and give it a go. We first practiced with our own ropes before we had a go with the big rope. With myself and Miss Smith at either end, every one of the children had a go and all managed at least 5 skips. It was so heart-warming to hear them cheering and congratulating each other as they had a go. Well done Marvellous Meerkats!!
In Drawing Club, we have shared the wonderful family favourite story of The Gruffalo. It has been such fun to hear the children’s ideas and see how they feed off each other’s imagination during partner talk time. They have written fantastic codes and who would have thought that the Gruffalo loves a disco!
We have continued exploring the value of numbers in maths. Using number lines, we have ordered numbers and identified one more and one less. The children have enjoyed using the manipulatives to really show me what they know. The year 1 children have also focussed on their digit formation too – well done superstars!
In science we have looked at different habitats and thought about the animals who live there. The children had some great ideas for why some animals need long necks and others waterproof feathers; did you know that camels have long eyelashes to keep the sand out of their eyes! We also took our learning outside of the classroom when we went on a hunt for mini beasts in their natural habitat; micro habitats. We were surprised to find so many just outside of our classroom. Today we looked a t food chains and the children identified who ate what and in what order. They even brought the mouse from The Gruffalo into their learning telling me that the mouse eats the acorns but the snake wants to eat the mouse. Please do ask them about their learning as I am sure they will be excited to share it with you.
We have used The Colour Monsters to help us identify and label feelings in Life Skills. We have talked about the different feelings we might have and the fact that we might even feel ‘mixed’ with lots of feelings sometimes and this is OK. We shared facial expressions to show how we are feeling and then discussed how different people can show different expressions for the same feeling. Here’s a link so you can share it at home. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68Ta6crRe4Y
A shout out for helpers:
We will be attending All Saints Church, Westbury for our annual Harvest Service on Thursday 16th October. If you are able to walk with us as a helper please let myself or one of the team know. We will be leaving school at 1.35pm and be back by 3pm. Helpers will need to be able to walk there and back with us. For those joining us at the church, the service will start at 2pm. Thank you.
