Plants and Persuasion!
Firstly, may I say how lovely it was to see you all at Parent’s Evening this week and be able to share your child’s learning with you. Thank you for your continue support.
I know many of you were impressed with the persuasive letters you read in the English books, well today the children finished their letters and they are currently with Mrs Budge. We eagerly await her reply. It has been fantastic to see how the topic of litter has really captivated the children’s attention and I am hearing lots of busy talk about why it is so important to look after our school and our planet. Did you know that children can earn a Blue Peter Green Badge for doing something to help protect our planet, or by encouraging others to help? If you would like to find out more please follow this link. https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/findoutmore/blue-peter-apply-for-a-green-badge
In Maths, we have continued learning about height and measurement and have been using maths vocabulary to explain our findings and reasoning. The children also applied their prior learning of the 4 operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) to answer questions. It was great top see the children using the resources and items around the classroom to practically complete calculations and reason with each other as to ‘how they knew…’ We even used each other to order tallest to shortest. Well done Meerkats!
In Life Skills we shared the story of Harold and his money. We followed the story hearing about how much money he had in his money box at the start and the different things that happened along the way that meant he could add to his savings; helping out at home, receiving a present and even borrowing a book from the library instead of buying one. We then discussed ‘What would we do?’ and the children shared their ideas about whether they would spend it or save it.
As it was St Patrick’s day on Monday, we used our PE lesson to do some traditional Irish dancing. We played some ceilidh music and danced some set pieces. It was very energetic and the children danced so well following the steps and the routine. We even learnt how to say ‘Welcome’ in Gaelic.
This week, we started our new science topic ‘Plants- What is growing in our local area?’. We have been investigating plants and trees just like scientists would. We have used our observational skills to identify the parts of a tree and a plant and learnt about the differences between evergreen and deciduous trees. To really explore the plant cycle, we have set up an in-class experiment to watch what happens at each stage when a bean grows.
Monday 24th March – Trip to Warminster Park
On our trip we will be overserving and identifying trees and plants in our local area. Children are to wear school uniform and comfortable shoes as we will be doing lots of walking; wellies are not required but a warm coat is as we will be outside all day. A packed lunch will be provided by school so please ensure your child has a small rucksack/backpack to carry this in.
Next week, I will be in class all week with our wonderful TA, Miss Smith.
Have a great weekend – let’s hope the sunshine returns!
Mrs Jeffery and Miss Smith.
