Penguins, Jazz and Meerkats!

Another marvellous week for the Meerkats and what a busy one it was!  We finished the week with an amazing musical afternoon when a jazz band entertained us all in the hall by the light of the Christmas tree! What a lovely way to finish the week.

Our topic ‘Why does the weather change so much?’ had certainly been a live topic this week when we have, some days, seen 4 seasons in a day!  We have looked at maps of the world to identify where the equator is and why the weather in countries close to it are so hot compared to cold countries near the Poles.  We have also looked at maps of the UK to see the different weather patterns we have in different parts of the country and why.

Talking of the Poles, we have shared a lovely story in English ‘The Emperor’s Egg’ by Martin Jenkins. We have re-enacted the story taking on the role of the mummy and daddy penguin and sequenced the story before writing a set of instructions on how to look after a penguin egg.  We used our bossy verbs to write the instructions and learnt that these are called imperative verbs.  As the photos showed the Meerkats did fabulous penguin impressions!  Here’s a link if you would like to share the story at home https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwLeExgxgg0

We continued learning and exploring shape in Maths and this week the children identified vertices, edges and faces on 3D shapes.  They also recognised repeated patters, created their own both practically and pictorially, and sorted shaped into groups.

We are certainly getting into the Christmas season and it was lovely to see so many little Meerkats enjoy Christmas stories by the Christmas tree on Wednesday. If you haven’t already heard, our class kindness Elf arrived on Monday and the children have named her Coco.  We have enjoyed receiving letters from her each day before we have great fun galloping around the classroom for wake and shake to ‘Sleeps til Santa’!

A little reminder…

We have begun practising our Christmas play so please send costumes into school in a named bag on Monday.

A shout out for helpers!

Thank you to the parents who have already offered to walk with us on Thursday 11th December to All Saint’s Church for the Christmas Service. If anyone else is available to walk to and from the church with us please let myself of one of the class team know.  We will be leaving school at 1.30pm for a 2pm start. Thanks in advance!

Finally, thank you for the kind and generous donations for the Tombola.  It’s going to be a good one!

Next week, I will be in class all week with our wonderful TAs, Miss Smith and Miss Lloyd.

Wishing you all a very happy weekend – enjoy the festivities in Westbury if you go!
