Meerkats have a 'spring' in their step!

Spring is in the air and brighter days are definitely having a positive impact on the marvellous Meerkats.  So much enthusiasm for all learning this week!

Linking to spring, we now have a beautiful floral wall in our classroom inspired by Georgia O’Keefe.  Using their knowledge of colour mixing the children painted their close-up flower sketches this week.  The children were given only the three primary colour powder paints but as you can see in the photo they mixed and created so many secondary colours to being their flowers to life.

In English we looked at different types of letters; formal and informal. We identified the features of both noticing similarities and differences.  Next week we will be writing a persuasive letter to Mrs Budge so in preparation the children worked in groups to persuade me to agree with them, they thought about persuasive language and identified reasons to make me agree with them.  It was great to hear the points they put forward to support their different causes and see the confidence as they presented them to me in their groups.  Their argument for why they should have extra playtime was so convincing I had no choice but to agree and we all got to enjoy extra playtime in the sun! We also learnt some kung-fu punctuation this week to help us in our writing.  Do ask your child to show you.

In Maths, we have been learning about measurement and have been using both cm rulers and meter sticks.  The children measured the length of smaller items first with cubes and then with rulers. They then thought about which measurement they would use for different items around the classroom, large and small, before practically giving it a go.

To continue our exploration of giving commands and instructions to robots in computing, the children instructed the Bee-Bots to move forwards and backward within a set perimeter this week.  They challenged themselves and their partners to move to the Bee-Bot to a new spot within so many moves but by only going forwards and backwards.  It was tricky at first ensuring they counted the moves correctly before giving the commands and some Bee-Bots ended up in different spots and some even left the sheet all together but practice made perfect and all successfully landed their Bee-Bot on the correct spot.

During our outdoor PE we have continued developing ball skills with a focus on control.  The children had great fun working as attackers and defenders. As the children moved around whilst bouncing the ball I could see how their control skills have really improved – great teamwork marvellous Meerkats.  For our indoor PE our focus is gymnastics and we are practicing creating shapes and methods of travel.  Just a reminder, PE is every Monday and Friday. Please ensure you child wears PE kit on these days to enable them to fully participate in the activities.

Thank you everyone for signing up for Parents Evening appointments, I look forward to seeing you all next week.

On Tuesday 1st April, we will be walking to All Saint’s Church for our Easter service.  If you are able to help by walking to and from the church with us please let me know.  We will be leaving at 1.25pm and be back by 3.05pm.

I will be in class Monday – Thursday next week and Mrs Rous will be teaching Meerkats on Friday.  Our wonderful TA, Miss Smith will be in with the Meerkats all week.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Mrs Jeffery and Miss Smith.
