Meerkats go Exploring!
What a wonderful week the marvellous Meerkats have had. We have really jumped into our learning and the Meerkats have worked very hard growing their brains! We are all settling into our routines and I must take a moment here to praise each and every one of the children for the numerous acts of kindness I have seen from them. Whether it be supporting a partner, sharing resources or exploring learning together. Well done Meerkats – your gem jar is definitely filling up and you have filled many buckets this week!
Our class book ‘The Bog Baby’ by Jeanne Willis has inspired our writing and imaginations during Drawing Club this week. We have created our own Bog Baby creatures, identified their super powers and thought about where they would live. In our writing we have focussed on our fundamentals of capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. The children have really wowed us with their imagination and ideas. Here is a link to the book read by the author if you would like to share it at home. https://www.google.com/search?sca_esv=0027e473cd7295c4&rlz=1C1GCEV_enGB1164GB1166&udm=7&fbs=AIIjpHxU7SXXniUZfeShr2fp4giZud1z6kQpMfoEdCJxnpm_3WBcADgXS0kQ7L92bqYkFCGs4piG0mmPDgZFV1TtUMvZylWLac4HWHOf637Sr7sPA6gkkAJ1CcG0nt1IV71otXM-z01qTlqY-gmA0H2y7yxveMJKsDXQaj2rPTz9QuDamknLk7AQEg51wyYDwJmmlCm9kO9XZPUOb2Euv-ckNC2MJsInbQ&q=the+bog+baby&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjAn4ehmdaPAxUjVUEAHXfuKpYQtKgLegQIFBAB&biw=1536&bih=695&dpr=1.25#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:b0df2c23,vid:44Ds1r7PP00,st:0
We have explored counting and representing numbers up to 20 in maths. We have used a variety of resources to support us and show how we know the value of the number. Do look at the photos to see how the children could make values and explain how they know the amount. We have practised counting forwards and backwards from 0-20. This skill can really be embedded through board games and counting activities so do ask your child and let they show you what they know – they really are very good!
Knowledge Organisers for science went home last Friday and this week we began our new topic ‘Who lives here and why?’ We took our learning outside of the classroom when we looked for things that were alive, dead or had never been alive. As the photos show we found lots of items to bring back into class to discuss and sort. We have also looked at what animals and plants need to survive and the different habitats in our world. It has been great to see the children create habitats and tell me what animal would live there and why.
PE has been all about team building and the Meerkats have certainly lived up to their namesake working fantastically as a team. Just a reminder, PE is on Monday (indoor) and Thursday (outdoor) and children will need to come to school in their PE kit on those days.
In RE we looked at the Christian teachings of kindness. We created a conscience alley after listening to a story where one friend was unkind to the other. We needed to think about what we would do if someone was unkind and how we could sort the problem. The children had great ideas and again their kindness shone through.
Book bag books and new reading folders were sent home today. Your child’s log in details for Oxford Owl are inside the front cover of the reading journal so please do log on to see additional resources to support your child’s reading journey. Please send this folder into school every day as we are very fortunate to have volunteers who come into school to listen to the children read throughout the week.
Finally, thank you for all the offers of help for our trip to Stourhead on Wednesday 8th October. We are really looking forward to it. Here’s a link to the letter with all of the trip information.
