Meerkats and Chicks!
It was all about ‘experiencing’ our learning this week with lots of practical hands-on activities, outside learning and some chirpy visitors!
We have been sharing a beautiful poetry book by Shirley Hughes in class called ‘Out and About’. Inspired by the poems, the children have learnt and recited the poems as a class and in groups and explored rhyming and descriptive vocabulary. But before they could write their own poems, we needed to experience what we were going to write about… Luckily, Mrs Millard brought her chicks into school for us to meet before we wrote our ‘Chick’ poems. We all got the chance to see the chicks up close and hear them chirp and cheep – 6 little chicks and 3 ready to hatch eggs brought much excitement to the classroom. Before writing our ‘Wind’ poem, we took streamers out into the playground to see and feel the wind. With the hot weather we weren’t sure we would find any wind but luckily there was a gentle spring breeze and our streamers whirled and twirled in the breeze. Here’s a link so you can share the book at home.

We continued our ’Money’ block in maths and this week and looked at calculating amounts using money. We practised a life skill of buying things from the shop, working out how much we would need to buy the items and what change we would need. The children have really enjoyed this topic so if you have any loose change at home, I’m sure they would love to continue developing this skill through role play.
In PE, we have been practising our throwing and catching skills which are essential for team games like netball, cricket and rounders. The children’s technique has really improved and their accuracy and spacial awareness resulted in some great challenge activities. All wonderful preparation for sports day on Wednesday 21st May at 1.45pm.
We completed our science ‘Seasons’ unit this week and they children made some fabulous information wheels and presented all of their learning in a colourful pictorial ‘show me what you know’. Next week we begin our geography unit ‘Where is our school and what is it like in our town?’ So, if you are out and about this weekend do look out for landmarks around Westbury.
New reading books are issued every Friday and new QR codes have been added into reading journals. Please ensure your child brings their reading book into school each day as we do have volunteer readers who come in and read with the children every week.
Next week, I will be in class all week with our wonderful TA, Miss Smith.
Have a great weekend – enjoy the sunshine and the Bank Holiday!
