Meerkats Exploring!

We have had a wonderful practical week of learning in Meerkats this week.  The children have taken the lead in their choices of activities and ways of showing their learning.  Myself and Miss Smith are so proud of all the children for the teamwork skills, responsibly towards the resources and curiosity shown over the week.  Well done Marvellous Meerkats, we will continue this next week.

In English we shared ‘The Rabbit Problem’ by Emily Gravett.  We followed the rabbits through the year and read about the different problems they encountered across the seasons.  Then, keeping with the rabbit theme, we thought about what a pet rabbit would need and how we would look after a pet rabbit.  Following our discussions, we wrote a set of instructions, complete with bossy verbs, ordinal numbers and a rhetorical question.  Here’s a link if you would like to share the book at home.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgZ-y0e5c20

Maths was all about fractions this week.  First, we explored ½ before moving onto ¼. Using a variety of resources, we thought about equal parts and how many equal parts there were before recording our learning.  The children particularly enjoyed showing their understanding with the food pictures identifying halves and quarters.  We will continue with this next week so if you are cutting up foods this weekend, do let your child tell you about the parts and if they are equal or unequal.

We began a new geography topic this week ‘Where is our school and what is it like in our town?’ We have investigated and explored our new learning with lots of hands on practical activities.  The children created 3D maps, loose parts routes, aerial views and wrote keys for maps, working so well individually, in pairs and groups.  Please do talk to your child about what we have been doing in geography as they have been using great vocabulary in class explaining and describing what they have found out and created.

Next week, on Monday, we will be taking our geography learning outside of the classroom as we venture on a walk around Westbury looking at physical and human features.  Please ensure your child has comfortable footwear and a waterproof coat.

In RE we have been learning about Judaism.  The children have taken a keen interest in the different traditions and celebrations of this faith.  We found out that during ‘Shabbat’ families join together for meals, singing, board games and prayers.  We also found out what the families were not allowed to do during this time and the children were surprised to hear that this include watching television, using X-Box, phones, computers and even ovens.  We learnt how to say hello in Hebrew and the Hebrew names for the special candles, cups, bread and place of worship.

As the sun was still shining we took our PE lesson out onto the trim trail today.  It was great to see the improvement in ball skills and skipping techniques.  We are really looking forward to showing you all our skills at the end of term on Sports Day.

Next week, I will be in class Monday – Thursday and Mrs Rous will be teaching Meerkats on Friday.  Our wonderful TA, Miss Smith will be in with the Meerkats all week.

Have a wonderful weekend – looks like the sun will be still shining.

Mrs Jeffery and Miss Smith.
