Friday 4th July
It has been a quiet but fun week in class, with many of our Year Twos heading off to visit their new schools. We’re so proud of how grown-up they’re becoming and know they’re going to shine in their new adventures!
In Drawing Club, we’ve been enjoying the story 'The Snail and the Whale'. The children have loved retelling the story using our sensory tuff tray, which helped bring the story to life. They've also been working hard on developing their fine motor skills: using tweezers to rescue sea creatures, creating their own threaded snails with hole punches and wool, twisting pipe cleaners to make snail sculptures and creating collage inspired by the story. Our star words this week have been: miniscule, enormous, shimmering, determined, gazed, dream, helpless, and slithered. The children are getting really good at using these in their writing and storytelling—great job, everyone!
In Maths, we’ve been exploring volume and capacity. We learned that volume is the amount of liquid in a container and capacity is how much a container can hold. We experimented with sand, water, and cubes to measure the capacity of different containers and decided that water was the most accurate non-standard unit. We also explored standard units—millilitres and litres—and used them to measure volume and capacity more precisely.
Our topic work on The Great Fire of London has continued with great enthusiasm. We discussed why the fire was so devastating and used drama to explore how ordinary people tried to put it out—remember, there was no fire brigade back in 1666! The children showed brilliant creativity and curiosity in imagining how people managed with leather buckets, fire squirts and fire hooks.
Well done to all our brilliant learners this week—you’ve been fantastic! 🌟
