Friday 3rd October
The children have been very busy this week, getting stuck into a wide range of exciting activities and learning experiences.
We kicked off our brand new art topic by exploring colour and pattern. The children had great fun experimenting with colour mixing by rubbing their hands together – each hand painted with a different primary colour – to discover the secondary colours they could create. We also investigated how to make colours lighter by adding white, and darker by adding black. Towards the end of the week, we turned our attention to patterns, thinking about how different patterns make us feel and how we can use them in our own artwork.
Our Drawing Club story linked beautifully to our art learning. We read the book Mixed by Arree Chung, which tells the story of three primary colours who mix together to create new, secondary colours. The children really enjoyed this creative story and it inspired lots of our fine motor activities throughout the week.
During these sessions, we mixed coloured water to explore how colours change, created our own story characters using collage, mixed different coloured playdough and even built houses for the colours using construction materials!
In maths, the class has been working on two different learning focuses. Some of us have been exploring part-whole models and number bonds. A part-whole model helps children understand how numbers can be split into parts. For example, 10 can be made from 5 and 5, or 6 and 4. These models help lay the foundations for understanding addition and subtraction. We used a range of resources such as 2-sided counters, cubes and Numicon to find different ways to make a number like 10. Some of us even used these number bonds to create addition fact families, showing how the same numbers can make different number sentences.
The rest of the class has been exploring measures, using language such as big and small, long and short, heavy and light, and full and empty to compare and describe different objects.
A real highlight of our week was a special visit from Reverend Rebecca on Thursday. She came to talk to us about the important work she does in our community and how we can all show kindness to one another. The children listened beautifully and asked some thoughtful questions they had prepared beforehand.
On Friday, the children had a fantastic time taking part in our sponsored Discothon! There were lots of smiles, laughter, and brilliant dance moves as we boogied to a variety of fun tunes throughout the day. A huge thank you to all our families for your generous support in raising money for the school – it is truly appreciated.
Looking ahead to next week, we’re very excited about our trip to Stourhead!
Please can children:
-
Wear a school jumper, joggers or leggings and comfortable shoes (trainers or wellies - as there is a lot of walking)
-
Bring a coat in case it is raining
-
Bring a backpack they can carry, as they will need to carry their own lunch.
We will leave shortly after 9 and return before the end of the day. If we are running late you will be notified by email and the school social media pages.
We’re looking forward to another fantastic week!
