Anchors Aweigh! Learning the Pirate Way!
The children have absolutely loved our pirate theme this week! The classroom has been a busy hive of activity, filled with pirate adventures from start to finish. We've been making boats, following treasure maps, hiding treasure, and even creating imaginative lands to explore. Some truly impressive pirate ships were built, using a variety of scales and materials. One of the highlights was watching the children work as a team to create and act out their own pirate stories. It was wonderful to see them taking turns, negotiating roles, and bringing their ideas to life together.
In our Drawing Club sessions, our text of the week was Pirate Pete. The children really enjoyed adding their own twists to the story, choosing props for each page and making creative decisions along the way. On day one, they drew their favourite characters. On day two, they designed the pirate ships they’d love to live on. By day three, they were deciding what treasures would be found in their treasure chests! Our vocabulary this week included: peer, adventuring, cutlass, voyage, ocean, navigate, directions, and cannon. “Cannon” was the clear favourite—especially because it meant firing lots of imaginary cannonballs!
In maths, the children explored patterns and developed their understanding of positional language and spatial reasoning. We also revisited key concepts such as number bonds and odd and even numbers. A favourite activity was “Finish My Pattern” using three different actions. The children then created their own repeating patterns using cubes, and later challenged themselves to continue those patterns in a circle—which was trickier, but they persevered brilliantly! On Friday, they visualised scenes from different viewpoints and used positional language to describe how the animals in our tuff tray looked from each angle.
Our topic work continued with seaside learning. We explored the beach as a habitat and discussed the kinds of animals that live there. The children learned that the seashore is where the land meets the sea, and we thought carefully about what we might find there. A highlight was watching a video of people exploring rockpools—it was fascinating to discover that starfish eat by pushing their stomachs out through their mouths to digest food externally!
On Friday, the classroom was buzzing with excitement as the children prepared to take part in the colour run. The children looked fantastic in their bright outfits and showed amazing energy running around the trim trail—many completed more than 10 laps! A huge thank you for all your sponsor support. We were incredibly proud of the children for taking on the challenge with such enthusiasm.
