5,4,3,2,1….Blast off!
Kangaroos kicked off the week with a space themed classroom and the children were very happy to find a rocket tent in the role-play area. The children have enjoyed exploring our theme of space throughout the week and we have had lots of lovely learning moments.
In our drawing club sessions, the children watched a classic episode of Button Moon which the children loved! We had three I wonder sessions this week that enabled the children to use their imagination. On day one the children thought about how they might travel to Button moon which included flying cars and even flying carpets. Day two the children were challenged to think about a place they would travel to in space and finally on day three the children thought about who Mr Spoon might meet or see on Button Moon. Our words of the week were Galaxy, orbit, asteroid, astronaut, comet, meteor, gravity and nebula.
Maths this week had a shape focus and the children have enjoyed using shapes to create pictures. We took part in a problem-solving activity where the children had to spot the odd one out and give a reason for why it was the odd one out. We discovered that shapes could be rotated and that shapes could be placed together to make other shapes. We enjoyed investigating how to make a bigger triangle using smaller shapes.
This week the children enjoyed far away Friday where we blasted off to space! The children sat in the rocket after completing their astronaut training. We launched into space and found out all about the International spaceship. We followed in Neil Armstrong’s footsteps by pretending to walk on the moon. There was the opportunity to make and eat some space food. The children found it hard to believe that the yellow powder was the same as the milk they drink. The children have loved exploring space in their play, we have had playdough aliens, space pictures, models of rockets and lots of children pretending to be astronauts or aliens in the role-play area.
I can’t believe it is nearly the end of term 5 already. Don’t forget that next week we have sports day. The children have already started to practice their skills ready for the big day.
We have had lovely weather for a few days this week so please can you remember to send your child to school with a hat each day.
I hope enjoy a sunny weekend and I look forward to the final week of term with lots of fun filled activities.
