A Week of Odd Socks, Poppies, and Pudsey!
Our class had a fun and colourful time celebrating Odd Sock Day! The children learned how odd socks represent celebrating differences and embracing what makes each of us unique. They loved showing off their own odd socks, and some even decorated sock templates in the creative area.
On Remembrance Day, our Reception children learned why we remember people who have helped in wars. They carefully made their own poppies and showed great respect during the silence. We were so proud of them for demonstrating understanding and thoughtfulness. An interest table with army costumes and related resources encouraged imaginative play. The children enjoyed the opportunity to carry out important missions around the classroom.
On a wet Autumn day, our class went on an Autumn walk. The children loved searching for the biggest leaves and spotting five leaves in different colours. The highlight was seeing a squirrel jump from tree to tree, which excited everyone. They noticed all the signs of the season, from crunchy leaves to changing colours, and thoroughly enjoyed exploring outside in the fresh, drizzly weather.
This week, our message centre inspired the children to write with purpose. We had a visit from the ‘min pins,’ magical creatures who live in the woods and leave little messages for us in the classroom. On their first visit, they left play equipment and a message in a sock. The children quickly worked out the message and wrote replies, leaving them by the ‘min pins’ door. Later in the week, the ‘min pins’ asked for help to stop the mischievous Autumn wind. The children came up with creative ideas, including making kites to fly in the sky, to send messages to the wind.
In maths, we explored circles and triangles. The children sorted shapes, recognised them in pictures, and discussed different ways to group them—by size, colour, or type. They were great at spotting the odd one out and explaining their reasoning. Later, they explored positional language by placing teddy bears in different positions around a cup.
We also had a wonderful time celebrating Children in Need! The children arrived in cosy pyjamas, making the day feel extra special. They decorated colourful, spotty biscuits with icing and Skittles and learned how the money raised helps children and families across the UK. The day was full of kindness, awareness, and smiles. Thank you to everyone who was able to donate.
Looking back on the week, we’ve had a wonderful mix of learning, creativity, and fun. From celebrating differences to exploring the outdoors and helping the magical ‘min pins’, the children have shown curiosity, thoughtfulness, and teamwork at every turn. We can’t wait to see what next week’s adventures will bring!
