Far Away Friday and a visit from Timmy the Tortoise
Wow! We are half way through the term already which is hard to believe!
The children have embraced three adventure days in our Drawing club sessions this week. We read the story, Handa’s Surprise and the children thought of ways in which they could stop the animals from stealing the fruit from the basket. On day 2, the children explored ways in which the animals could steal the fruit such as going above Handa in a hot air balloon and uncurling a giant spring so they could bounce down and get the delicious fruit. Day 3 saw the children drawing a magical tree that would grant wishes if you pressed different buttons. We had lots of great ideas such as music playing, monsters visiting and sweets appearing from the branches. The vocabulary for this week was Perched, Oblivious, Precarious, Oasis, Traipsed, Shade, Pinch and Healthy.
In our Maths sessions this week we have been exploring one more or one fewer than a number up to 10. The children enjoyed singing 10 little men in a flying saucer and making one man fly away. We have been subitising numbers within 10 and the children are becoming more confident to say what groups of numbers they can see. At the end of the week we looked at Number bonds to 10. The children used the numicon to discuss which two numbers add together to make 10.
In our creative sessions this week the children finished their collages that they have been working on. They started by cutting strips of green wallpaper and placing these in horizontal or vertical lines overlapping them so they covered all the paper. Children then chose some animals to add to their ‘grassland’ collage that they had made. We have also continued to look at what animals need to survive and how we can care for them.
In our RE sessions the children looked at symbols and decided whether they represented Easter or not. The children particularly enjoyed sharing their knowledge of the Easter Bunny. At the end of the week we celebrated Far Away Friday. The children entered the classroom to find the aeroplane set up and their passports ready to fly to Africa. The children explored different places in Africa such as Westbury, Johannesburg, Victoria Falls and Kruger National Park through Google Earth. When we ‘landed’ we explored the river, mountains and went on a Safari. We got to see what animals you would find if you went on Safari by watching video clips. The children had the opportunity to dress in bright and colourful clothes. We had a number of artefacts for the children to explore and the musical instruments were a hit! As part of the day Miss Grieve had a surprise for all the children when they got to meet Timmy the Tortoise. The children were very brave and most held Timmy to see how heavy he was.
Next week we will be starting a junk modelling project so if you have any spare boxes, tubes or egg cartons we would be grateful if you could send them into school.
Have a great weekend
