Ending the term with a very special visit!

What a fantastic last week the marvellous Meerkats had to Term 4. I can’t quite believe all we packed in this week on top of all of our learning and that we are at the end of another term!

We began our countdown to Easter with our Easter Service in All Saints Church on Tuesday.  The children sang and performed their poems beautifully.  We enjoyed a sunny walk to the church and the children behaved impeccably during the service.  The Meerkats and Leopards joined together to perform ‘There once was an Egg…’  Please do ask them to recite this as they were amazing.  I do have a video which I will try to upload to the blog - a few technical issued uploading it at the mo.  Thank you to all the parents who joined us on the walk, your support is very much appreciated.

On Wednesday, Davina from the Wiltshire Fire Service joined us in school.  She showed us the protective clothing worn by firefighters, and some super little volunteers put them for us all to see.  She also explained the importance of fire alarms in the home and what to do when the alarm sounds, before showing the children how to make a 999 call (with the help of a Meerkat volunteer) if there is a fire.  We also listened to the story ‘No dragons for tea.'   Here’s the link if you would like to share it at home https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=loMxue1GtyE

Merci to all the parents who joined us in class for story telling on Thursday, it was great to see so many of you and your support for the story telling was very much appreciated.  We are fortunate to have many fantastic stories to share with the children in school and our weekly visit to the school library enables the children to take books home to share with you.  If you ever want a recommendation please do ask one of the class team, and equally please do share with us great books that you have enjoyed with your children.

Inspired by our book ‘Oliver’s Vegetables’ the children all produced a variation of the story in a comic strip format.  Using their great descriptive vocabulary, I read about their various characters picking green crunchy cucumbers and juicy red cherry tomatoes and even purple squishy aubergines, before finally digging up the potatoes and sharing bowls of chips- scrumptious!

We continued recording information with tally charts, bar charts, counting totals and drawing pictograms in maths this week.   If you are out and about on walks during the holidays this is a great activity for the children to do.

We finished our ‘Plants – What is growing on our local area’ topic this week.  Spring has certainly been the perfect time for this learning and each day we have seen our learning come to life in our local area.  We have observed the changes to our beans in the experiment we set up in class ‘growing beans in a bag’ and I have taken the shoots home to plant up for the children, as you can see from the photo we have had success with our beans!  Here’s a link if you would like to try it at home.

However, the best part of the week was the visit we had from the Easter Bunny on Friday.  She hopped and skipped around the trim trail as the children found their decorated eggs.  Once back in class the children all received their chocolate Easter egg from the Easter Bunny.  Plus an extra treat from our lovely volunteer reader Shirley – thank you and Yummy!

It really has been a great term; the Meerkats are full of enthusiasm for their learning and they are a joy to teach and I look forward to seeing them all on Tuesday 22nd April for Term 5.

I will be in class all week the first week back with our lovely TA, Miss Smith.

Wishing you all a very happy and relaxing Easter holidays.
