Meteorological Meerkats!

As the photo gallery shows the marvellous Meerkats have certainly had a busy week growing their brains and having fun whilst learning.  Myself and the team are so proud of how they enthusiastically jump into all of the learning whilst being a bunch of truly fabulous little people; working together as a team, helping each other and yes, the gem pot in full again!

In English, we continued with the theme of Antarctica when we wrote Information Posters ‘All About Penguins!’   First, the children worked together in groups to find out about a penguin’s appearance, habitat and diet and even an interesting ‘Did you know…’ fact before creating the poster.  It was great to see the children really thinking about the new vocabulary that they had learnt and then incorporate it into their writing.

It was all about shape in maths.  We looked at 2D and 3D shapes and identified their names before counting sides and vertices (maths vocabulary for corners!) of the 2D shapes - The children explored the shapes, drawing them, using them to create patterns and pictures before following the strategy to ensure accurate counting.  We then looked at vertical lines of symmetry and using paper shapes the children found the lines of symmetry.

We began our new geography topic ‘Why does the weather change so much?’  We have looked at the types of weather here in the UK, the seasons and weather patterns in coastal and inland places and why it differs.  The children have created weather symbols with playdough, drawings and collage and explained what they represent.  The have also created coastal and inland areas and explained what the typical weather there would be like.  I think visits to Weymouth and Portland inspired the lighthouses!  We have a little season action to help us remember the 4 seasons – do ask you child to show you.

In computing, we explored how lighting affects the quality of our photographs.  We first used natural light before trying other light sources to find out which resulted in better photographs.  The children worked so well with their partners and were able to explain which of their photographs were the best and why.

A shout out for helpers!

We will be walking to All Saint’s Church on Thursday 11th December for our Christmas Service.  The service starts at 2pm and we will be leaving school at 1.30pm. Please let myself of one of the class team know if you can help by walking with us.  Thanks in advance!

Just a reminder, please ensure that your child has a waterproof coat in school with them every day as we do try to get outside for PE and playtime unless it is very heavy rain.

Next week, I will be in class Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.  Mrs Millard will be teaching Meerkat Class on the Monday.  Our wonderful TAs, Miss Smith and Miss Lloyd will be in every day.

Enjoy the weekend – nearly the start of the magical season.
