Stickman and the family tree....
This week the children have loved reading the story Stickman. We have discussed how he would be feeling at different points in the text and explored his journey back to the family tree. The children were very kind during our Message Centre lessons, helping to create a map so that Stickman could find his way home. In the second Stickman lesson, the children thought about where Stickman and his family could go on an adventure. We had lots of interesting ideas, including Rainbow Land, Dinosaur World and even Candy Land. The children are really enjoying our Message Centre lessons and love talking about their marks with their friends and the grown-ups in the room.
In our maths learning this week, the children have been exploring one more and one fewer than a number. We have built staircase number patterns with the unifix cubes and explored how you add one each time by moving forwards for one more and backwards for one fewer. The children enjoyed a pretend bus journey where there was one fewer passenger each time, and we revisited this at the end of the week by adding one more or having one fewer. The children have also worked hard using five frames to represent numbers and to show one more or one fewer with counters.
In our topic learning, we have been exploring nocturnal animals and discussing which animals you would see in the day and which you might see in the evening. The children loved listening to the story Day Monkey, Night Monkey, and we compared the animals each monkey would see. The children helped the animals in our sensory garden by creating cosy, safe homes for them. Many children worked really hard to camouflage the homes and make them beautiful. In our RE lessons, we have been introduced to the Christmas story, ready for the festive countdown to begin. The children have enjoyed making cards in the creative area and thinking carefully about who they will give them to.
The children have also enjoyed pretending to be teachers, and we have seen lots of fabulous phonics learning through their play. It has been a real joy to watch, and we definitely have some teachers in the making. In other areas, the children have been exploring how to make different homes with the blocks and even attempting to make the perfect house for Stickman.
We love using the trim trail in all weathers. It’s really helpful if your child has wellies in school, as it is becoming muddier with the change in weather. We are also changing into our slippers when we return to class, so it is helpful if these are named as well.
We are so proud of the children’s curiosity, creativity and enthusiasm, and we can’t wait to see what adventures next week will bring. Have a lovely weekend!
