Welcome to our new blog!  We hope to share all the wonderful things we are learning about in YR.

  • Friday 21 July 2023 21st July 2023 Sports Day was won by Team Blue. There were many great performances and it was lovely to see such determination to finish races as well as possible.
  • Friday 14 July 2023 14th July 2023 The children have been bug hunting, learning more about butterflies and their life cycle as well as bringing in home made boats to see if they float. During the week we also let our butterflies fly off on an adventure. The wet weather allowed time for a 'Draw with Rob', where the children drew their own Numbersaurus.
  • Friday 7 July 2023 7th July 2023 Another week flies by! The children have been getting excited about meeting our butterflies that we have been looking after for the past couple of weeks. They have also been studying the story of 'The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch', writing and drawing for a new display and also making their own sandwich (not mustard!) which they ate without any trouble from the gulls. During our maths sessions the children have been solving problems and measuring.
  • Friday 30 June 2023 30th June 2023 This week was a time for myself to reflect on the year spent with these amazing children and for the children to start looking ahead to Year 1. They spent a couple of enjoyable afternoons with their new class and teachers and returned excited about the challenges and opportunities that will come in September. Back in Caterpillar class the children have been studying about rockpools, showing off their number ordering skills to 22 and having great fun writing some cheeky messages!
  • Thursday 22 June 2023 22nd June 2023 Today we enjoyed our trip to the seaside. The children all had great fun with lots of lovely memories made. Many thanks to all our helpers who ensured this great trip could take place.
  • Friday 16 June 2023 16th June 2023 Another hot week which ended with the children completing a colour run with some changing colour as they ran! The children have also been making cards, showing off their maths knowledge, writing messages and producing more lovely art.
  • Friday 9 June 2023 9th June 2023 We had a lovely turnout for our grandparents afternoon. It was great to see so many enjoy the artwork of Caterpillar Class.
  • Friday 26 May 2023 26th May 2023 The final week of Term 5 ended with a walk around Westbury, passing by many landmarks including the old Infant School, the oldest indoor swimming pool in the country, a secret garden and the park. Here we had an ice lolly before some end of term fun on the equipment. During the week the children enjoyed making aeroplanes at the parent event, writing about aliens, implementing their PE skills on the Trim Trail and making books and models.
  • Friday 19 May 2023 19th May 2023 A local artist came and visited the children this week to share her own artwork of Westbury White Horse and help the children complete their own version. They have also been busy drawing pictures to match number sentences, Using the story of 'Billy's Bucket' for ideas. The warmer weather has encouraged the children to venture out of class and improve their tennis skills and the water play has been a hit with the children working together to solve problems.
  • Friday 12 May 2023 12th May 2023 We had a delivery this week that came with an exciting huge box! The children also enjoyed using our new large parts construction materials and it has been lovely to see the collaboration between groups and good quality conversations taking place.
  • Friday 5 May 2023 5th May 2023 Today we celebrated the coronation of King Charles III with a party and an English themed dance workshop. The children have also been busy writing invitations.
  • Friday 28 April 2023 28th April 2023 The children have been looking further afield, heading off on a train journey and talking about different countries they have visited or would like to visit. The children have looked at different flags and have made their own. In PE they continue to develop their core strength and balancing skills. Also improving the quality and shape of jumps from different heights. It has been great to see that their confidence in writing continues to increase, they have also made time to sing a variety of their favourite hits!
  • Friday 21 April 2023 21st April 2023 The children went straight back into school routines at the start of Term 5 and were all delighted to catch up on holiday news from their friends. Many have started new after school clubs along as well as new Read, Write, Inc groups and leaders. Our focus during maths sessions has been on doubling and they enjoyed a game of Splat! with Dragonfly Class on Friday, showing off quick recall of doubles. Also on Friday the children continued the work of the older children on a mosaic to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III. You will be able to see the final version in the sensory garden very soon.
  • Friday 31 March 2023 31st March 2023 The end of Term 4 has arrived along with some lovely little chicks! Well done to all those who entered the Easter egg competition, there were many great entries this year. The children enjoyed the Easter egg hunt and meeting the Easter bunny. I am sure they will enjoy the surprise found back in the classroom. Have a great Easter holiday!
  • Friday 24 March 2023 24th March 2023 We started the week with a Mother's Day assembly, we hope you enjoyed it! The children love singing which was also on show at the church today for our school Easter service. The children have been out to the sensory garden finding minibeasts and then observing the differences and similarities between them. As part of our maths sessions, they have been set challenges with trickier repeating patterns and have also looked at 3D shapes, using these to make our own indoor bug hotel.
  • Wednesday 15 March 2023 15th March 2023 Today we visited Fairfield Animal Centre and had a great time meeting all the animals. We fed the goats and met a variety of animals that included rabbits, emus, pigs, horses, chickens, highland cows, sheep, turkeys and a wallaby or two. The children also had fun exploring the climbing equipment, showing off how much their confidence has grown throughout the year.
  • Friday 3 March 2023 3rd March 2023 The children celebrated World Book Day by dressing up as a word and exploring new vocabulary. During the week they also had a visit from Mrs Russam who is our Maths lead. She was very impressed with how well the children were working, the explanations offered and how they measured their feet using cubes. One book we looked at this week was 'Dear Zoo'. The children enjoyed making their own books based as this story. On Friday we opened up some deliveries and were especially excited to see some new scooters!
  • Sunday 26 February 2023 24th February 2023 The start of Term 4 saw the class working hard after the holiday break. The children looked at the story 'The Tiger Who Came to Tea' by Judith Kerr with some now using Set 2 sounds in their own writing. In maths, we have been learning about 8 and how it is made and looked at where eight is found on animals and in the environment. The children have also been learning all about jungles; the animals that live there, where they are located, the sounds that can be heard and the differences in the plants.
  • Thursday 9 February 2023 9th February 2023 In the morning the children had great fun watching the Bubbleman show off his talents before tucking in to a delicious ice cream and toppings in the afternoon sunshine.
  • Friday 3 February 2023 3rd February 2023 We have been busy continuing to learn about cold places. The children are developing their skills in writing, by saying the word they want to write, then 'pinching' out the sounds using their 'Fred fingers' before writing it down. The children are trying hard to form letters correctly, starting in the correct place. In maths, we have been counting objects and actions with increasing accuracy. We look forward to the parent event this coming Wednesday where the children will be able to show off their subitising skills and sound knowledge in our bingo games.
  • Friday 27 January 2023 27th January 2023 This week Caterpillar class have been busy comparing mass and capacity, using different sized containers to investigate and make direct comparisons. They have proved that bigger items are not always heavier than smaller objects and measured out ingredients to make play dough. We have also looked at the story of 'Lost and Found' by Oliver Jeffers and made our own penguins and began to learn some facts about these superb swimmers and have been rowing their own boat to the South Pole. The children have also been thinking about their own health and safety, discussing what they can safely put into their bodies, what foods are healthy and how medicines can be very helpful, but also dangerous if not used correctly. Finally, they also found time to talk about the Chinese New Year!
  • Friday 20 January 2023 20th January 2023 Another busy week in Caterpillar Class! The children enjoyed rounding off the week by making (and eating) gingerbread people. We took a tally of which body part was gobbled down on the first bite! Many children got their name into the Celebration Book for great effort with writing about 'The Gingerbread Man' story. In maths, we have continued to see how amounts can be split into different parts in a variety of contexts. They have also used the White Rose Maths, 1 Minute Maths App to improve their speed when subitising amounts.
  • Friday 13 January 2023 13th January 2023 This week we have been reading and learning about 'The Gingerbread Man', composition of numbers to 5 and also showing off our agility, balance and coordination in PE. The children have also settled into new Read, Write, Inc groups and worked well with old and now new talk partners.
  • Monday 12 December 2022 12th December 2022 Today the children will perform to their parents for the first time after a dress rehearsal for Key Stage 1 on Friday. They have another performance on Tuesday which is followed by our Christmas Fair.
  • Friday 9 December 2022 9th December 2022 This week the children have been preparing for our nativity performances, exploring the ice and visiting the church for our Christmas service.
  • Friday 2 December 2022 2nd December 2022 Christmas has started! The children have been busy learning the songs to our nativity alongside our usual curriculum. A rather cheeky elf has arrived and the children have named our elf 'Coco'.
  • Friday 25 November 2022 25th November 2022 Another week flies by! We finished it with some cooking in maths which all the children enjoyed!
  • Friday 18 November 2022 18th November 2022 This week the children supported Children in Need, practised their football skills ready for the World Cup and described different shapes in maths, with a focus on rectangles including squares. They have also challenged themselves with an increasingly difficult obstacle course!
  • Friday 11 November 2022 11th November 2022 In additional to our trip (see yesterday's post) we have been busy being historians and also remembering those lives lost in recent and more distant conflicts.
  • Thursday 10 November 2022 10th November 2022 Today we visited Moors Valley Country Park in Dorset. The children met the characters from 'The Gruffalo', had great fun on the play trail, met and triumphed over personal challenges and walked a tree top trail. Thanks to our parent helpers, without them we wouldn't be able to take the children on this valuable experience.
