Meerkats meet the Meerkats!

First thing to say this week – Well done marvellous Meerkats!!!  You were an absolute credit to your yourselves and the school this week on our class trip. Myself and the team are so proud of you all. Also, a big thank you for our parent helpers, your support and help is very much appreciated and without it, these trips could not go ahead.

We had a wonderful day at Noah’s Ark Zoo on Wednesday, the sun shone and the animals were all out to see us.  We met our name sake meerkats, and some of us even felt brave enough to feed them – crickets!  We learnt more about these not so cuddly creatures however, as the pictures show – we still think they are very cute.  We were surprised to meet Christina Bush, the founder of the zoo, as we walked around and she stopped and spoke to us and then kindly gave us some grass pellets to feed to the camels.

As we have been learning about the Big 5 and other animals from Africa, we had to make sure we saw the elephants, rhinos, lion (lionesses) unfortunately we didn’t see leopards or buffalos but we saw so many other animals.  We sat by the elephants for lunch and we were entertained with a cheeky display of acrobatics by one of the gibbons.  We were all surprised to see just how tall the giraffes were and have come away with some other questions which we will look at together in class next week – Why do elephants have different size tusks? It was a fantastic opportunity for the children to see the animals they are learning about in the classroom up close to support and bring their learning to life.

Coincidently, we started a new book in English this week ‘The Hunter’ by Paul Geraghty.  It is a story about a girl from Africa called Jamina and a baby elephant. The children have already ordered the story from pictures, written some fantastic sentences, learnt some new vocabulary and used the text to write sentences with apostrophes for possession.

Talking books, please do continue to support your child with their reading by visiting the RWI blog and watching the videos linked. https://www.westbury-inf.wilts.sch.uk/News/Friday-26th-April-2024/
